Oman Designs

Filing Requirements:

1. Power of attorney, legalized.

2. Copy of certificate of incorporation or extract from the commercial register, certified.

3. Deed of assignment from the designer(s) to the applicant, legalized.

4. Full description of the design, name of the designer and 4 prints of the design.

Renewal:

For two consecutive terms of 5 years each.

Duration:

5 years from the filing date.

Examination:

As to novelty

Applications With Multiple Figures:

Admissible up to 100 designs provided that all these designs belong to the same class in international specifications.

Remarks:

Oman introduced Industrial Property Rights Law no. 67 of 2008 on May 17, 2008, which includes provisions on design protection. This law replaces existing laws no. 38 of 2000, 39 of 2000, 40 of 2000, 41 of 2000, and 82 of 2000. The regulations implementing Law no. 67 of 2008 came into force in Oman on December 17, 2008 by virtue of Ministerial Resolution no. 103 of 2008. The Omani Patent Office is now accepting design applications. However, it is important to note that the Omani Intellectual Property Department is yet to disclose specific formalities regarding requirements, examination, publication, registration and renewal.
